Meet the Directors at Forestgate Community Theater

discovered her love for drama in her sophomore year of high school.  For the next three years she was actively involved in the theater program by either acting, stage crewing, performing vocally, accompanying vocalists on guitar or performing her original works in comedic, dramatic and musical compositions.

Upon graduation, Joan received the High School’s prestigious MostSignificant Contributions to Theatre Award. Joan went on to earn her Bachelors of Fine and Communications Arts Degree in Film and Television in 1980 from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. During her four years there, Joan interned at KABC working on the Regis Philbin Morning Show and also with Mort Stevens, an arranger, conductor and composer who is best known for the theme music to the TV series Hawaii Five-O.

After marrying Alexander Funke in 1980, Joan thoroughly enjoyed the next 20 years homemaking and raising and homeschooling their three daughters. In 1999 Joan, in partnership with Desiree Schultz, re-entered the world of theatre by reviving Peyton High School’s Theatre Program. “The Drama Ladies”, as they were affectionately called, also taught after-school theater/acting workshops and created Skitzo’s Drama Club. Their first production of Our Miss Brooks, the 1950’s Radio Show and a wacky melodrama-gone-wrong called The Scheme Of The Driftless Shifter, received enthusiastic response from the Peyton community. In 2000, they also produced and directed But Why Bump Off Barnaby, a comedy who-dunnit mystery.

Becoming increasingly aware of the growing talents in the theatre within her church community, Joan taught drama workshops in the fall of 2003, culminating in the production of Little Women.

Now in it’s sixth year, Forestgate Community Theatre has produced four full-length plays with a fifth in production:

Little Women, directed by Joan Funke, 2004

A Night Of Comedy, In Three One Acts, directed by Joan Funke, 2005

Anne of Green Gables, adapted and directed by Karen Hamer, 2006

The Sound of Music, directed by Joan Funke, 2008

And in the fall of the 2009 season:

Pride and Prejudice, a play with music, adapted and directed by Karen Hamer

Joan also enjoys working with pregnant teens at Life Network as a coach in their Life Steps program, volunteering in the Theater Department at the Fine Arts Center in Colorado Springs, working with Crossroad Bible Institute as a correspondence teacher in their prison ministries, teaching guitar, team teaching a Women’s Bible Study, singing alto in her church choir and traveling with her husband.
